When the driver has a truck they will start to work immediately. The driver will always attempt to schedule hauls from their home city out and then back again to minimize downtime, but occasionally no suitable cargo will be found for the return trip.
Under each driver's name you will find a rating that describes how efficient the driver is. As you train your driver in new skills and increase their training in existing skills, their rating will increase. As their rating increases, so too does their earned income.
Below the rating you will find the starting wage that the driver is asking. Whenever your new driver completes a job, this fee will be deducted from the job income along with any fuel and toll expenses. As the driver gains rating and skills, the wage will go up accordingly.
The final information displayed about each available driver is their skills. These will go up in time, but it is still a good idea to get a driver with a variety of skills. Long distance is the most wanted skill for making money, then ADR. Even eco driving can make a difference.
The default setting for skill improvements of a hired driver is "Balanced". You can find it on driver's detail in Driver Manager section of your Company Manager. It's recommended to change it to more specific skill, like Long distance or ADR.

The game is non-linear with basic premise of the game being that the player can drive one of a choice of articulated trucks across a condensed depiction of Europe, picking up cargo from various locations and delivering it. As the game progresses, it is possible for the player to buy more vehicles and depots, as well as hire other drivers to work for them.

There are seven items of map downloadable content (DLC) that expand the game to more countries and locations, and multiple other truck and trailer DLCs.

There are several expansion packs that expand the functionality of the game, including Cabin Accessories DLC (which allows players to personalize their truck interiors), and two DLCs that allow transport of heavy cargo: Heavy Cargo DLC and Special Transport DLC (also available for American Truck Simulator; consisting of even heavier cargo that exceed regular cargo regulations with escort vehicles that will help guide the player deliver cargo at short distances). With this DLC, the dynamic is separate from the regular gameplay. The crash happened on Oct. 17, 2019, killing two people from South St. Paul. According to the criminal compliant, a witness driving westbound on Highway 55 saw a semi-tuck waiting to turn left onto Doyle Path as a dump truck approached. Fonji, the driver of the dump truck, hit a pickup truck and another car before stopping side-by-side with the semi-truck.
The crash reconstruction report found that Fonji would have been traveling at least 55 mph when he hit the pickup truck, veering it off the roadway into a ditch. Fonji's dump truck then struck the victims' car, pushing it into the semi-truck and splitting it in half. The report also found that there were no weather or road conditions that contributed to the crash, and the driver should have been able to slow and stop before reaching the traffic ahead of him. Another contributing factor could be the driver's distraction by a phone.
A Minnesota State Patrol Trooper came to the scene around 12:20 p.m. and saw a semi-truck angled across the lanes, a dump truck, and a crushed passenger vehicle that was spilt in half and smashed between the two trucks.
